Travel Advice

From the ROAD is about the experiences and rejuvenation that we get and hopefully, you get from being on the road for whatever period of time you can manage. Friends have asked us to share stories, photos, and advice about our trips, and this seemed like the best way to accomplish this.

While it is pretty obvious when you are traveling that you are a tourist, I enjoy planning and being informed about the areas I am visiting.  I read about the history, people, food, and music. I find that planning lets me connect quicker and more easily with people as I have multiple points of reference to draw from. I also find it allows us to spend less time trying to get from point A to point B and more time just experiencing.

But don’t eat the mints

Years ago, we were traveling to Steamboat Springs via Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.  We stopped to get gas at the Barn Store/Greyhound Bus station at the junction of Highway 34 and 40. They didn’t have an indoor bathroom but had Porta-johns in the parking lot. Inside the Porta-john someone had written in large black marker “Don’t eat the mints” with an arrow drawn towards the green urinal cake. While obvious, it has remained a reminder that when traveling and in life, sometimes simple advice is the best.
